Targa Florio

The toughest rally at the time

In the days when cars were not commonplace, when driving a ‘sports car’ was a dangerous pastime of an eccentric hobbyist, Vincenzo Florio organised a race that turned the streets of Sicily into a circuit. This race, which took place in 1906, would continue until 1977 and was regarded by the drivers as the toughest rally of its time. From 1955 until 1973, the drivers could gain world championship points in the race. The last Targa Florio for this championship was won by Gijs van Lennep and Herbert Müller in a Porsche 911 Carrera. Porsche has won the Targa Florio eleven times. In honour of this race, Porsche named a new class of sports car the Targa. The word means ‘shield’.
